“THE ELTHAM PARK TREE STEALING CASE.” Eltham and Whittlesea Shires Advertiser and Diamond Creek Valley Advocate (Vic. : 1917 – 1922) 30 Apr 1920
The thought of Eltham having a race track and horse racing events, has a certain romance and excitement about it. Reading reports in newspapers of events which were staged there, gives you a sense of the “wild-west” nature of the time and place. Newspaper reporting, before advancements in photography, was more descriptive and colourful. Don’t get me wrong, I love photography and old photos, but it is highly unlikely that any photos, particularly pre-1890, were taken at the Eltham races, hopefully a couple might surface one day. It is easy to imagine a simpler era, where and when enterprising local people organised events for their own entertainment and to help fund other projects.
The image below is an aerial photo of what remained of the track in 1945, which has been superimposed on a current aerial photo.
